The Murray State women look to maintain their momentum Wednesday as they travel to face OVC-leading Belmont at 6 p.m., in Nashville. It will be the first of two trips to the Music City this week as the Racers will face Tennessee State Saturday at the Gentry Center.
MSU is coming off a 72-63 win over Tennessee Tech Saturday in Cookeville. Bria Bethea led the Racers in the victory with her second double-double of the season as she scored 27 points, one off her career-high and grabbed 11 rebounds, setting a new career-best in that category. Ke'Shunan James added 16 points and eight assists.
With the 16 points, James surpasses current MSU assistant Amber Guffey (2005-09) for third place on the all-time career-scoring list in program history. James' 1,889 career points put her within striking distance of Ashley N. Hayes (2,007) for second place on the career-scoring list.
The defending OVC regular season and tournament champion Bruins are once again on top of the conference standings. A trio of All-OVC performers in Darby Maggard, Sally McCabe and Kylee Smith leads Belmont. The Bruins have been without their leading scorer Smith (19.6 ppg) during conference play but still enter Wednesday 6-0 in the league. Maggard is averaging 16.7 points and 5.5 assists per game while shooting nearly 42 percent from 3-point range and 95 percent at the free-throw line. McCabe meanwhile, is averaging 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. Jenny Roy leads Belmont with 8.3 boards per contest and is second on the team with 85 assists.
As a team, the Bruins are scoring 79.5 points per contest, are shooting 47.3 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. All three marks lead the conference.
The Racers are looking for their first-ever win at Belmont and just their third win all time in the series against the Bruins.
