The Game
A once common opponent, Arkansas State returns to the Murray State women's basketball team's schedule Tuesday for the first time in over a decade. Tip-off from First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Racers never trailed and led by as many as 37 in a convincing 97-61 win over Lipscomb last Tuesday night. The Racers came out of the gate with a smothering defense that held Lipscomb to just two field goals and eight total points in the first quarter. While Murray State continued to clamp down on defense on one end of the court, they lit up the scoreboard on the other throughout the game, shooting 50.7-percent from the floor and 53.8-percent from 3-point range. The Racers were also near perfect at the free throw line going 13-for-16 on the night. Macey Turley scored a game-high 21 points, while Lex Mayes followed with 16. Evelyn Adebayo was just one board from a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Cekeya Mack had the first double-digit point performance of her career with 10.
The Arkansas State Series
Tuesday will be the 17th all-time meeting between the Racers and the Red Wolves, but the first time since 2007. The two teams met 13 times from 1982 to 1991, but have met just three times since then. The series currently stands even at eight games apiece, however Arkansas State holds a 6-3 lead in games played in Jonesboro.
Scouting The Red Wolves
Arkansas State is 1-4 on the year with a win over Memphis and a two-point loss to Oklahoma State and an overtime loss on the road at OVC member UT Martin. The Red Wolves currently average 70.8 points per game, while giving up 80.4. Peyton Martin currently leads ASU at 15.0 points per game, while Jireh Washington follows at 10.4. Akasha Westbrook leads all rebounders for the Red Wolves with 6.6 per game, to go along with 8.8 points. As a team, ASU is shooting 40.5 percent from the floor, despite shooting just 18.8-percent from three-point range. The Red Wolves have also struggled at the free so far this season, shooting just 65.3-percent.
A Win Tuesday Would...
Give the Racers their first win over a program that sponsors FBS football since 2012 when they defeated Ball State at home, 63-53.
Rank And File
Murray State currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in three separate categories. They are 10th in free throw percentage at 80.0, eighth in scoring offense at 89.0 and fifth in fewest fouls at 54.
Eight Is Great
In three of their four games this season, the Racers have limited their opponents to just eight points in the opening stanza. They did so against Evansville, Oakland City and Lipscomb and went 3-0 in those contests.
Three For All
Macey Turley kept Murray State's streak of winning a weekly award alive Tuesday when she was named as the OVC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
A Friendly Face
Arkansas State assistant Todd Buchanan is no stranger to the Racers, as he is a 1995 graduate of Murray State. In addition to his time as a student at Murray State, Buchanan served as an assistant for the Racer women from 1992-1995 and also coached at three local high schools; Lyon County, Calloway County and Murray.
OK, What's Next?
The Racers return home Saturday to take on regional foe Alabama A&M at 5 p.m.
