Racers Fall 2-1 In OT Battle At SIUE

The Murray State soccer team came up short in a 1-2 overtime loss against the SIU Edwardsville Cougars at Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Illinois. The loss marks the first time the Racers have tasted a regular-season defeat by an Ohio Valley Conference opponent since the 2014 season.

The Racers (6-2-1, 2-1) jumped out to an early lead after Miyah Watford sent a cross into the box only to find 6'2 sophomore Symone Cooper with a jumping header for the goal. Cooper's header gave the Racers a 1-0 advantage over the Cougars and accounted for her first score of the season.

Murray State had another great scoring chance after Cori Cain used her free kick opportunity to find Cooper yet again for a header inside the box. Unluckily for MSU, Cooper's header bounced wide.

The Racers carried the 1-0 lead into the half on five shots with four of those on net while the Cougars logged six shots of their own in the first period.

Much of the second period saw MSU on the defensive, as the Cougars took an aggressive offensive approach.

SIUE finally connected with an equalizer by Becca Jostes coming off a spot-on sideline throw from Allison Wendt in the 69th minute. The Cougars attempted an identical throw-in score just six minutes later, but Alex Steigerwald managed to make a diving save to hold SIUE at 1.

The Cougars gained another scoring break inside the box after being awarded a penalty kick at the 84:40 mark. Fortunately for the Racers, SIUE's shot missed wide. Neither MSU or SIUE managed to register a goal for the remainder of the period, sending the two squads to settle things in overtime.

SIUE quickly executed yet another thrown-in from Allison Wendt, who sent the ball into the box for teammate Angel Ikeda to make a play. The Cougars earned the golden goal and a 2-1 win over the Racers.

The Racers, who averaged 19.8 shots per game before Sunday's contest, managed to log only nine shots for the match while the Cougars recorded 21 shots. The Racers have only been outshot in two games this season, with the first time being in MSU's 0-3 loss at Ole Miss.

Murray State looks to bounce back next week, as the Racers will be back at Cutchin Field for the first time this month to take on Tennessee Tech (Sept. 28) followed with a game against Jacksonville State (Sept. 30) to conclude September in Murray, Kentucky.
