The Game
The Murray State women's basketball team will play two games in Mississippi as it continues the first steps of its 2019-20 campaign. The Racers will first travel to Mississippi Valley Wednesday to take on the Devilettes at 6 p.m., followed by a date with the eighth-ranked Bulldogs of Mississippi State Friday in Starkville at 6 p.m.
Last Time Out
Sophomore Macey Turley scored 18 to lead the Murray State women's basketball team in a 76-40 loss to #9 Louisville at the KFC YUM! Center in the 2019-20 season opener for the Racers. Despite the score, the Racers limited Louisville to just 22 points in the half court, with the Cards scoring the rest of their points off turnovers or on second chances. The Racer defense also forced 11 turnovers in the game with Louisville committing a total of 21 on the night. Turley was 6-of-14 from the floor Friday including 3-of-6 from three-point range to go along with four assists. Gibson followed Turley with eight-points, while Cekeya Mack and Laci Hawthorne led MSU on the boards with six rebounds each.
The Mississippi Valley Series
Wednesday will be the sixth meeting between the Racers and the Devilettes with MSU leading four games to one. Wednesday's game will also mark just the second time that Murray State has travelled the road to Itta Benna, winning their lone contest there in 2016.
Scouting The Devilettes
Mississippi Valley will enter Wednesday's home opener at 0-2 after falling at Ole Miss and North Alabama. The Devilettes are currently averaging 56.5 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 79.0. Shelli Thigpen and Ayonna Cotten currently lead MVSU at 12.5 and 12.0 points. respectively. Thigpen also leads the team in rebounds at 4.0, while Cotten averages a team-high 2.5 assists per game. From 3-point range, Murray State should be wary of Cotten and Erin Smith who are 5-for-11 and 4-for-7 in the first two games of the season.
The Mississippi State Series
Friday will be the first meeting between Murray State and Mississippi State since 1996. The two teams have played just six times with the Bulldogs winning all six contests. The two teams have met three times at neutral sites (Arkansas, Arkansas State and Middle Tennessee, once in Murray and twice at "The Hump" in Starkville.
Scouting The Bulldogs
The eighth-ranked Bulldogs enter Friday at 2-0 after dispatching the Racers' OVC foe, UT Martin, Tuesday. 82-47. Jessika Carter led Mississippi State in the game with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Chloe Bibby followed with 12 points and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 55.6-percent from the floor in the game, 57.1-percent from three-point range and 58.3-percent from the free throw line. On the year, Mississippi State is averaging 86.5 points per game, while holding opponents to 52.0. Through two game, the Bulldogs are scorching opponents with a 55.0 field goal percentage in addition to a 44.4-percent three-point percentage and a 65.0 free throw percentage.
