Racers & Pioneers Have First Meeting since 1939
Only these Covid-19 times we are currently living in could create a match-up of two teams that haven't played in 81 years. That's exactly what we have when the Transylvania Pioneers make a visit to the CFSB Center this week. In 1939, both schools were participating in the early years of organized athletics. That game was contest at Murray State's Lovett Auditorium where the Racers won 42-32. Fast forward to 2020 and Transy plays in NCAA D-III and in the Southern State's Conference. The Racers jumped into NCAA D-I in 1948 as one of the founding members of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Murray State men's basketball team swapped opponents for their Tuesday (Dec. 15) game at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. This game had a chance of being played in November, but that has given way to playing this week. When the Racers' Prairie View game was canceled due to established institutional protocols, the Racers swapped out and was able to add Transylvania.

Racers Look To Push Ahead With Winning Streak At CFSB Center
Murray State enters the Transylvania game having won 24 in a row at the CFSB Center since their last loss in January of 2019 to Belmont. One more win and the Racers will tie the fourth-longest win streak in program history tying the 25 game run that Coach Billy Kennedy's teams had from 2009-11. The second-best streak for the Racers was 32 in a row from 1035-39 for Coach Carlisle Cutchin. Now 20 years after it ended, MSU's school-record 47-game home win streak from 1996-2000 is still the top streak in Racer history.
Â
Racers Unable To Overcome Slow Start At Southern Illinois
After falling behind 12-2 to start the game and fighting back to grab the lead with 1:24 left, the Racers are still looking forward to their first road win of the season after losing 70-66 Friday at Southern Illinois. KJ Williams fought foul trouble in the first half, but still managed 17 points to lead the Racers as he tied his career-high with three 3-point baskets. Brion Whitley notched a career-high 15 points on three 3-pointers. The all-time series between the Racers and Salukis is tied 19-19. The two teams will meet in Murray next season.
Â
Racers To Hit The Road - A Lot!
The Racers and Salukis are looking the toughest part of their schedule in the eyes starting with their next game at Austin Peay (Dec. 21). The game in Clarksville begins a stretch of seven games for the Racers with six of them away from the friendly confines of the CFSB Center. MSU plays at Belmont (Dec. 30) before hosting Morehead State (Jan, 2). MSU faces another four in a row on the road with trips to see SIUE/Eastern Illinois and SEMO/UT Martin.
Â
Whitley Glad To Be Playing Again
Out of Sarasota, Fla., Brion Whitley is again contributing to the Racers after missing all of the 2019-20 season with a knee injury. In back to back games, Whitley set career-highs in scoring after he had a 15-point night against Southern Illinois. Whitley was 5-of-10 from the field including 3-of-6 from the 3-point line. There is every reason to believe he can return to his form from the 2018-19 season when Whitley was a 46 percent shooter from the 3-point line on 21-of-45.
