Murray State women's tennis will travel to Evansville, Indiana on Saturday to begin its mission of capturing OVC tournament glory. The third-seed Racers (8-9, 4-3 OVC) will take on the second-seeded Governors of Austin Peay (10-3, 5-2 OVC) in the semifinals of this year's tournament that features a reduced four-team field due to COVID-19. The match will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Evansville Tennis Center. The winner of Saturday's contest will advance to Sunday's championship match against the winner of top-seeded Southeast Missouri and #4 Jacksonville State.
All-Time Series:
Saturday's match between the Racers and Governors will mark the 68th meeting between the two sides, with Murray State holding a commanding 47-20 lead in the all-time series. Austin Peay has gotten the best of the Racers in the last three meetings, however, which includes a 6-1 Governor victory in the regular-season finale just a week ago.
A Look at the Racers:
After a 3-0 start to the conference campaign, the Racers hit a bump in the road - finishing the season with one victory over their last four outings. Doubles play has played a big part in the outcome of matches this season for Murray State, as the Racers have won the doubles point in all four of their conference victories in 2021. In contrast, the Racers are 0-3 in the OVC this season when they concede the doubles point. The duo of Marit Kreugel and Stasya Sharapova has posted a 5-2 record at the No. 2 position, while Gabrielle Geolier and Anja Loncarevic have teamed up to go 4-1 at the No. 3 spot against conference foes.
In singles, Murray State features three players with winning records in the OVC, beginning with the No. 1 position where Sara Loncarevic's 4-3 conference mark has provided a spark at the top of the Racer lineup. Her straight-set victory over Austin Peay's Fabienne Schmidt in the regular-season finale was good for career singles win #64 as she moves into the top 25 in program history in singles wins - tying Anne Ress (1975-79) for 25th on Murray State's all-time list. A pair of freshmen have also had a tremendous impact in 2021, with Sarah Bureau posting a 5-2 OVC record (5-1 at the No. 3) while Gabrielle Geolier cruised to a 6-1 mark against conference competition at the No. 6 spot on the season. In addition to successful conference campaigns, they both have produced overall singles records of 12-5 and 10-6 respectively during their first seasons in a Racer uniform.
Scouting Austin Peay:
The Governors earned the #2 seed in this year's OVC tournament after posting a 5-2 conference record (10-3 overall) that features five-straight victories ahead of Saturday's semifinal meeting with the Racers. As no conference championship was played in 2020 due to the pandemic, Austin Peay enters the weekend as defending OVC tournament champions after winning the 2019 title in convincing fashion with back-to-back 4-0 victories in the postseason.
In doubles, the Governors are led by the duo of Fabienne Schmidt and Danielle Morris, who have paired to post an 11-1 overall doubles record and a 5-1 mark in the OVC at the No. 1 position. Jana Leder and Aleks Topalovic have also produced a winning mark in doubles play in 2021, going 6-3 overall with a 3-1 record against conference foes playing at the No. 2 position.
In singles, the Governors are led by Morris (8-5, 5-2 OVC), Leder (11-2, 7-0 OVC), and Topalovic (8-5, 4-3 OVC) who all carry a winning record against OVC foes at the No. 2, 3, and 4 positions respectively.
