Racer Tennis Improves to 4-1 Following Two Wins Over Cumberland
Murray State women's tennis looked dominant in a weekend sweep over Cumberland (Tenn.), winning both matches 7-0 at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Hardin, Kentucky. The two wins move the Racers to 4-1 on the season following previous wins over Eastern Michigan and Bellarmine.
The Racers took care of business in the first doubles matchups of the day with freshman duo of Jordi Font Montero and Paola Campigotto taking the first doubles matchup 6-1. The pairing of Sarah Bureau and Marit Kreugel secured the doubles point for Murray State winning 6-2 before Stasya Sharapova and Annika Pschorr would complete the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win.
Kreugel began a strong singles showing for the Racers with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Bureau and Sharapova would each take their singles matchup to claim the match point for Murray State. Font, Campigotto, and Natalie Slezakova would all win their singles points to secure the 7-0 sweep for the Racers.
Murray State continued their dominant day in the second match against the Phoenix. The Racers again took all three doubles matchups to secure the first point of the match. In singles play, the Racers went unblemished winning all six matchups without dropping a set.
"We had a slow start in doubles in the first match playing tentatively and not executing our shots very well which caused us some trouble," coach Jorge Caetano said of doubles play. "We were able to get it together and played almost perfectly on all three courts in the second match, striking the ball with confidence and finishing the points at the net."
On singles play, Caetano said, "In the first match, Natalie and Stasya had their hands full with their opponents playing some really good tennis. Both let the opponents take control of the match but were able to make the adjustments to get the win in the end. The rest of the matches we were able to dominate from start to finish not letting the opponents get comfortable at any point, very strong performances from everyone overall."
The Racers have won all five doubles points thus far with the pairing of Bureau and Kreugel going 8-0 combined throughout the fall and spring seasons. Sharapova and Pschorr have the hot hand in doubles as well, currently riding a seven-match win streak as a duo.
Sharapova continues to lead the Racers with a 9-0 combined record across doubles and singles play. Newcomers Pschorr, Font and Campigotto are combined 20-3 in singles and doubles in the Spring.
Murray State continues their season this Friday (Feb. 11) at Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
