Racers Win Fifth in a Row, Earn Sweep over Southern Indiana

Murray State baseball picked up another dominant victory over USI with a 13-3 mercy-rule victory

Murray State baseball earned its fifth straight win with a 13-3 mercy-rule victory over Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Johnny Reagan Field. In the series sweep, the Racers outscored the Screaming Eagles 39-8 while scoring 48 runs for the week.

Strong pitching was once again in the forefront of MSU's success with Bryce Valero and Ben Krizen combining for seven innings with just one earned run allowed. Valero earned the win after going 5.2 innings pitched with eight strikeouts and zero earned runs. On the season, the right-hander now holds a 0.86 ERA across 21.0 innings pitched and 28 strikeouts.

Several Racer bats shined once again, combining for 10 hits to bring the weekend total to 29. Designated Hitter, Charlie Corum led the way for MSU with three hits to go with an RBI and a run scored. Outfielder Seth Gardner kept his explosive production at the plate going for this series, driving in his ninth, 10^th, and 11^th RBIs of the weekend.

Shortstop Drew Vogel was productive from the lead-off spot, driving in three RBIs with a hit and two walks in the contest. Fellow middle infielder Logan Bland continues to be one of the hottest hitters in the Murray State lineup with two more hits in Sunday's bout while picking up a pair of RBIs. Bland now leads the team with a .321 batting average in 2023.

The Racers have seven players with 10 or more RBIs to pair with a pitching staff that has seven arms with a sub-3.50 ERA throughout the campaign.

Murray State returns to action on Tuesday when they play host to longtime-rival Austin Peay for Popeye's Battle of the Border. First pitch of the matchup is scheduled for 5 p.m.
