The Racers blasted six home runs in Sunday’s shootout.
The Racers belted six of the 10 total home runs in the series finale, tying for the third-most team home runs in a game in program history. It was the sixth time MSU has reached the feat in program history, and did so for the first time since 2022 when the Racers hit 10 homers at Eastern Illinois.
The Redbirds led off the first inning with three runs on an RBI single and a two-run homer. The Racers answered back in the home half with a two-out grand slam off the bat of Taylor Howell to put MSU ahead. Murray State added another four runs in the second on a two-run homer from Drew Vogel and a two-run double from Dan Tauken.
In the third, the Redbirds and the Racers exchanged three-run homers with Jonathan Hogart delivering the long ball for MSU to give his team an 11-6 lead going into the fourth.
The fourth inning was the only inning of the game where neither team scored a run. In the fifth, Illinois State added two runs on a solo homer and an RBI base hit before Vogel and Hogart each responded with their second home runs of the game. Ethan Krizen then gave the Racers a six-run cushion in the sixth with a two-run homer for his first of the year.
The Redbirds cut the gap to three runs with four scored in the seventh and eighth innings on another solo homer and a pair of RBI doubles, but were shut down by the Murray State bullpen to secure the series win for the Racers.
Jacob Hustedde earned his first collegiate win on the mound, going 1 2/3 relief innings allowing just one run on one hit, one walk and striking out three batters.
Preston Shelton picked up his first three-hit game as a Racer, along with Hogart and Vogel also recording multi-hit games. Hogart and Howell each drove in four RBIs and Vogel drove in three. The duo of Hogart and Vogel also combined for seven of Murray State's 15 runs scored on Sunday. All nine starters for the Racers recorded a base hit.
Murray State is set to take on UT Martin in a two-game midweek series starting on Tuesday, April 30 at 5 p.m. CT in Martin, Tennessee. The second game of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 1 at Reagan Field.
