JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Murray State women's tennis team dropped its first outdoor match of the season Saturday, falling to Jacksonville State in a hard-fought non-conference battle.
The Gamecocks took an early lead by securing the doubles point. While both teams traded games through the first five sets, Jacksonville State broke away for 4-2 leads on all three courts. The Racers' No. 2 duo of Sofia Issakova and Barbora Hermanova battled back to 4-4, but Jacksonville State clinched the point with wins on courts one and three.
In singles play, the Racers jumped out to commanding leads on four of the six courts. However, the Gamecocks regained momentum by splitting the first sets across the board. Jacksonville State extended its lead to 3-0 with quick straight-set victories at the No. 6 and No. 3 positions.
Sophomore Bruna Melato fought off several match points at the No. 5 spot before falling in a tight second set, which provided the clinching fourth point for the Gamecocks.
Murray State found success at the top of the lineup, where juniors Yuna Kadowaki and Valeria Chaikovskaia earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. At the No. 4 position, Yu Kikawa saw her four-match winning streak come to an end following a narrow 10-8 loss in a third-set tiebreaker.
"First outdoor match of the season is always tough, but we competed hard and unfortunately could not win the big points to turn the match in our favor," said Murray State head coach Jorge Caetano. "We have a tough stretch of matches ahead of us with five matches in nine days starting at UNA next Saturday, but this is exactly what we need at the moment."
The Racers return to action Saturday, March 14, at North Alabama.
