Scouting UT Martin
The Skyhawks have opened the season with a 6-5 mark overall and a 1-1 record in conference action. UTM has been the victor in its last two outings, including a 68-66 win over Indiana State (Dec. 19), its first home game of the 2010-11 campaign.
The Skyhawks have two key scorers, with over 15 points per game, and three players that account for over 60 percent of all their shots. Heather Butler is the team's leading scorer, with 19.5 ppg, while Jasmine Newsome is netting 15.4. Butler and Newsome combine with Jaclissa Haislip to take the majority of shots for UTM. The trio account for 65 percent of the overall shots, 71 percent of those beyond the arc, and 61 percent of the free throws taken. Haislip is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.3 boards per game.
The Skyhawks are evenly matching against their opponents on the season box score in most categories. The one area that they have a slight disadvantage from their opponents is blocks. UTM is having 4.5 of its shots blocked per game and only swatting away 2.5 of its opponents shots.
The Skyhawks and their opponents both seem to need the first half to get warmed up to scoring. UTM has tallied 85 more points in the second stanza and its opposition has tallied 73 more.
Against the Skyhawks
A year ago the Racers and UTM each earned a victory on their home court by a margin of at least eight points.
Juniors Kayla Lowe and Rachael Isom are the top returners for MSU. Lowe averaged 21 points and three rebounds per game, while shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range. Isom added 9.5 points and 2.5 boards per game.
The Skyhawks held advantages in shooting percentage and free throws, while the Racers had an edge in rebounding and steals. UTM shot .462 from the field and .536 from beyond the arc, while MSU hit 32.6 percent of its shots and 23.1 percent of those from three-point range. The Skyhawks also took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe. UTM made 37-of-53 free throws, while the Racers made 17-of-20 attempts. MSU's advantages were in rebounds (30 to 32.5 per game) and steals (8.5 to 4.5 per game).
The only two returns for the Skyhawks are Alecia Weatherly (16.5P/6.5R) and Erica Glisson (4.0P/2.0R).
The Series
MSU currently owns a 32-29 advantage in the all-time series, but UTM took the last outing. The Racers have won eight of the last 10 games in the series. When playing in Martin, Tenn., MSU is trailing the series 13-18, but has been victorious in three of the last five games played at the Elam Center.
Getting Some Air Time
With a recent announcement from the OVC, the Racers will now have at least one game on television this season. The OVC added nine games to its OVC Basketball Television Package. The Racers game at UT Martin (Dec. 22) will now be shown on the Wazoo network, ESPN3.com, and ESPN Full Court. Local cable subscribers can see the games on channel 81 for Murray Electric subscribers and channel 214 for those with NewWave.
Robinson Highlight Night
The opening night of OVC action saw sophomore Mariah Robinson making a personal highlight reel. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native tallied a season-best 21 points, including 17 in the first half of action. She also added five rebounds, two assists, and a season-high three steals. Robinson added another 20-point game to her career against Southern Illinois. She led MSU with 20 points and added a season-best four steals.
Jessica Jumping Right In
Red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey has been a stable force for the Racers in her first season on the court. The Marion, Ark., native is first on the team in rebounding, averaging 7.7 boards per game, and third in scoring (8.8 ppg). Against Morehead State, Winfrey tallied 11 points and a career-best 10 rebounds for the second double-double of the season by a MSU player. Her talents on the court have led to her scoring at least one point and adding at least one rebound in every Racers game this season, while also recording seven steals and four blocks.
No Senior Leadership
After fighting through an injury plagued year in 2009-10 the Murray State women's basketball team will be in a select group of NCAA DI teams this season that will allow them to use the drive and determination they discovered last year, as the roster has no seniors listed. The Racers are one of seven programs in the country with no seniors on the 2010-11 roster.
The youthful roster has just nine years of NCAA collegiate experience on it, which ranks third among OVC teams for the least amount of NCAA collegiate experience. The only teams with fewer years of experience than the Racers are UT Martin (3) and Eastern Illinois (8).
Lowe Down Against the Eagles
Junior Kayla Lowe, a native of Pikeville, Ky., seems to love being back home in the eastern portion of the state. Lowe has tallied 15-or-more points in three of the last four games played in that area of the state. The trend started with a 15-point performance against Morehead State (Feb. 25) and was followed by a 28-point performance less than a week later in the same gym (March 2). Lowe then tallied 15 points against Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 2) last week in the opening game of the OVC schedule and earned 23 points against the Eagles (Dec. 4). That makes two-straight 20+ point performances against Morehead State.
Continuing Streaks
Two members of the MSU team that returned from the 2009-10 season have continued streaks that they started a year ago. Junior Rachael Isom has been a key force for the Racers since last season, scoring at least one point in 45 straight games and recording a rebound in 24. Sophomore Mariah Robinson in the final returner with a streak, tallying a rebound in the last 24 games.
New Season New Name
Murray State University's Regional Special Events Center (RSEC) will now be known as the CFSB Center, thanks to the largest gift in Murray State athletics history. CFSB (Community Financial Services Bank) donated $3.3 million to MSU's athletic program securing naming rights of the facility.
OVC Tournament Changes
This year the OVC Tournament will all be contested at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., from March 2-5. The top two teams in the regular-season standings will earn byes into the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. This is the first season that the conference will bring all eight teams to one venue for the entire tournament, as in the past the first-round games have been played on campus sites.
Up Next
The Racers will now have eight days off before beginning the longest home stand of the 2010-11 campaign. The first team to come to the CFSB Center for the streak of four games will be SIU Edwardsville (Dec. 30). IUPUI travels to Murray (Jan. 4) and the Racers then host an OVC weekend with Tennessee State (Jan. 6) and Austin Peay (Jan. 8) coming to town.
