The Murray State Racers defeated Tennessee Temple 83-41 Thursday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., marking their best start since the beginning of the 2003-04 season at 3-0.
Isaiah Canaan scored 16 points and Donte Poole 15 to help the Racers win their 13th straight non-conference home game and ninth overall.
MSU secured its third win of the season with outstanding defense.
After leading 19-17 in the first 10 minutes of the half, the Racers locked down on the Crusaders and finished the half holding them to seven points on only five more shot attempts.
Canaan hit one of his three three-pointers on the night at the 4:00 mark and the Racers led 38-22 and had a 46-24 advantage at the half.
MSU continued with some hot offense in the second half in getting a pair of threes from Poole and Canaan for a 17-4 run and a commanding 63-28 lead with 14:00 remaining.
One aspect of the game was Murray State's experience of defending 7-1 center John Reik who led Tennessee Temple with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
“He was very good tonight,” MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “You take away his baskets and we held them to 8-of-30 for the game, and fortunately we forced 16 turnovers in the first half. We did a better job from start to finish (on defense) in Baltimore, but I wanted to make sure our guys were prepared and locked in for Tennessee Temple as we head into a five game road trip.”
After Canaan and Poole, the Racers had three others in double-figure scoring with 12 each from Ed Daniel and Zay Jackson and 11 from Jewuan Long.
MSU subdued the Crusaders by the tune of 6-of-26 shooting in the second for only 23 percent. MSU forced 26 turnovers and only committed nine of their own.
What lies ahead for the Racers now is a long road trip that will span 11 days and approximately 9,600 miles. MSU's five-game road swing starts Sunday at UAB in Birmingham, Ala in a 3 p.m. tip at Bartow Arena. The Racers are playing in the Great Alaska Shootout for the first time during Thanksgiving week. After three games in Anchorage, the Racers play at Western Kentucky (Dec. 1). MSU's next home game is with Dayton (Dec. 4).
