The Murray State Racers make their first appearance in the Great Alaska Shootout when they meet the host Alaska-Anchorage Wednesday (Nov. 23) in a 9:30 p.m. central time game at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. This is the first meeting between the two.
The Racers' second game in the event will be against either Dartmouth of San Francisco on Saturday (Nov. 25) at 3 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. central time. The Racers' stay in Alaska ends with a game against one of the teams in the bottom of the bracket: Central Michigan, New Mexico State, Southern Mississippi or UC Irvine on Sunday (Nov. 26).
While in Anchorage, the Racers will have some “adopted” fans. West Anchorage High School has been named MSU's practice location and the school's pep band and cheerleaders will be at the Racers' games this week.
The Racer's last game before coming to Alaska was Sunday when they scored a 66-52 win at UAB in Birmingham, Ala. MSU scored quite a comeback when they were down by 12 points with 10:20 remaining, but ended the game on a 25-8 run to move their record to 4-0. The best start for the Racers since they started 8-0 at the beginning of the 2003-04 season.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 4-0 start is tied for fourth among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. He's tied with John Miller (1942), Steve Newton (1985) and Mark Gottfried (1995). Tevester Anderson (1998) had the best start of a Racer coach at 9-0.
The game at UAB started a five-game road swing, as they don't play at home again until they host Dayton (Dec. 4). Before coming home for Dayton, the Racers play at Western Kentucky (Dec. 1).
In all, the Racers will travel approximately 9,600 miles before their next game at the friendly confines of the CFSB Center.
