The Murray State Racers survived an upset bid in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout and came away with a 64-62 win over host Alaska-Anchorage at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.
The MSU win pushes their start to the 2011-12 season to 5-0, the best start since the 2003-04 team was 8-0.
Trailing by a point at half time, the Racers seemingly had the game in control when they built an 11-point lead at 62-51 with 1:46 remaining.
UAA managed to cut MSU's lead to three with 6.5 seconds left on an 8-0 run, but Racer senior Ivan Aska hit a pair of free throws with 5.1 left to make the lead 64-59. A buzzer three-pointer by UAA's Abebe Demissie made the final a two-point for MSU.
“I told our guys after, don't take winning for granted,” MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “This game is about winning and they don't come easy. You preach to everybody that UAA is a top-20 division-two program -we traveled a long way out here- that this was going to be a tough game. We got up seven to 10 points on them in each half, they were very resilient.”
Isaiah Canaan was named the player of the game in a vote by media members for his 19-point effort on 7-of-10 shooting. Canaan was 2-of-4 from three-point range and led the Racers with four steals. Ivan Aska and Donte Poole each added 13 points to the MSU attack. Newcomer Stacy Wilson came off the bench for his best game with the Racers with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Aska became the 37th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club when he made a steal and dunk at the start of the second half. Teammate Canaan has 835 after tonight's game.
The Racers rescued the win with a blistering second half of shooting when they hit 15-of-24 from the field for 63 percent. The Racers also won the battle of the boards 26-20 including 10 to three in the second half.
MSU had another big night on defense by forcing the Seawolves into 20 turnovers and grabbing 10 steals.
MSU has Thanksgiving Day off before returning to action Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the semifinals against San Francisco, a 71-69 winner over Dartmouth. Thanksgiving day also brings the other two first round games when Central Michigan faces New Mexico State and UC Irvine plays Southern Mississippi.
