The Murray State Racers take on the San Francisco Dons Friday in the semfinals of the Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska in an 8:30 p.m. central time tip. Both teams reached the second round after seeing large leads evaporate in the late minutes only to hang on for two-point victories.
The Racers trailed at the half against host Alaska-Anchorage but had a 62-51 lead with 1:46 left. The Seawolves closed the gap to two with 5.1 seconds left when Racer senior Ivan Aska sank a pair of free throws to seal the win. The Dons led Dartmouth by seven points with 1:05 remaining and held on to win 71-69. Both teams have won their last five games.
The series between the Racers and Dons is three games old with the first meeting coming in 1960 and the last in 1979. MSU has won all three.
The Racer's win over UAA kept their undefeated season going as MSU is off to their best start since the 2003-04 team started 8-0. MSU's start defensively compares well with the 03-04 team and the 2009-10 squad...both Ohio Valley Conference champions and NCAA teams. The current edition of the Racers has 59 steals and forced 108 turnovers. The 03-04 team had 61/110 and the 09-10 team had 59/83.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 5-0 start is tied for fourth among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. Prohm ranks behind only Harlan Hodges (7-0 in 1949-49), Mick Cronin (8-0 in 2003-04) and Tevester Anderson (9-0 in 1998-99).
With a steal and dunk for the first points of the second half for MSU against UAA Wednesday, senior Ivan Aska became the 37th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. Approximately 450 players have worn the Racer uniform in 87 seasons and only a little more than eight percent have made this exclusive group. Isaiah Canaan is next in line. He starts the USF game with 835 points.
San Francisco is 5-1 after wins over Northern Arizona, Louisiana-Lafayette, San Jose State, Seattle and Dartmouth. Former Kansas start Rex Walters' squad has only one loss, in the season opener against North Dakota State.
USF has won its last four games by a combined 11 points. Dating back to last season, the Green and Gold owns a 10-1 record with in games decided by three points or less or in overtime contests.
While in Anchorage, the Racers have some “adopted” fans. West Anchorage High School has been named MSU's practice location and the school's pep band and cheerleaders will be at the Racers' games this week.
MSU hopes history is on their side this week. The last three champions of the Great Alaska Shootout have practiced at WAHS including: St. John's (2010), Washington State (2009) and San Diego State (2008).
Through its 34 years of competition, the Great Alaska Shootout has become and event that is embraced at all levels in the city of Anchorage.
The first event was played in 1978 where North Carolina defeated Louisville. Last season, St. John's was the champion over Arizona State.
