Great Alaska Shootout
Murray State (6-0) vs Southern Mississippi (4-1)
Saturday, November 26, 2011 11 p.m. CST
Sullivan Arena - Anchorage, Alaska
The Murray State Racers meet the Southern Mississippi Golden eagles in the Great Alaska Shootout championship game at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska in an 11 p.m. central time tip.
The Racers reached the title game after a 64-62 win over Alaska-Anchorage on Wednesday and 70-67 victory Friday over San Francisco in the semifinals. USM made the title tilt with a 78-67 win over UC Irvine and an 80-72 win over New Mexico State in the semifinals.
The Racers are competing in their sixth straight in-season tournament event and are looking for their first in-season championship since the 1998 Sooner Classic at Oklahoma when they defeated Arkansas-Little Rock and the host Sooners.
Coming into the title game with USM, the Racers are 66-65 all-time in 59 total in-season tournaments since their first in 1944 when they won the Midwest Tournament in Terre Haute, Ind. In all, MSU has won 10 in-season tournaments in their 87-season history.
The Racer's win over USF kept their undefeated season going as MSU is off to their best start since the 2003-04 team started 8-0. New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 6-0 start is tied for fourth among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. Prohm ranks behind only Harlan Hodges (7-0 in 1949-49), Mick Cronin (8-0 in 2003-04) and Tevester Anderson (9-0 in 1998-99).
With a steal and dunk for the first points of the second half for MSU against UAA Wednesday, senior Ivan Aska became the 37th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. Approximately 450 players have worn the Racer uniform in 87 seasons and only a little more than eight percent have made this exclusive group. Isaiah Canaan is next in line. He starts the USF game with 856 points.
