The Murray State Racers return home the CFSB Center to host the Dayton Flyers Sunday in a 1 p.m. tip in the first meeting between the two since 1997. The Racers (8-0) are coming off a 70-59 win Thursday at Western Kentucky, while the Flyers (5-2) are coming off an 84-55 loss at Buffalo.
It has been a long while since the Racers last played on their home floor. MSU's last time at home was an 83-41 win over Tennessee Temple (Nov. 17).
Dayton leads the all-time series with MSU 5-2, but the Racers won the last meeting in Ohio in 1997. The Flyers have only made two trips to MSU in the series, those coming in 1952 (MSU's only win vs UD at home) and 1955.
Junior Isaiah Canaan enters the UD game with a 20.3 points per game average, which ranks him first in the Ohio Valley Conference and 22nd in NCAA D-I. Canaan is also nearing the coveted milestone of entering the MSU 1000-Point Club. He starts the UD game with 910 points. Canaan was named the MVP of the Great Alaska Shootout and Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week after he scored 25.3 points per game in three MSU wins, including a career-high 36 points in the title win over Southern Mississippi. Teammate Ivan Aska became the 37th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club (Nov. 23) with 13 points against Alaska-Anchorage.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 8-0 start is tied for second among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. Prohm ranks with Mick Cronin (8-0 in 2003-04) and one game behind Tevester Anderson (9-0 in 1998-99).
The Racers enter the Dayton game with a nine-game home winning streak since their last loss to Eastern Illinois (Jan. 20). MSU has won 12 straight non-conference games
since the last loss to Louisiana Tech (Feb. 21, 2009) in a BracketBusters game. The Racers have posted 161 wins and a winning percentage of 85 percent in their 14th season in the building and have never lost three in a row at home during that time.
