BOX SCORE
Senior outfielders Elliot Frey and Zach Noonan put their names in the Murray State record books as they became the ninth and 10th players to collect 200 hits in their career at Murray State. The efforts were not enough as the Breds dropped a 9-7 decision to Morehead State in the second game of the doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.
The Eagles (10-35, 6-12 OVC) struck first in the second inning as Travis Redmon followed a leadoff single with a two-run home run to left center. Daniel Pugh extended the lead with a pop fly to right field that got over the fence in the very short right-field porch. The short pitch continued to come into play at Luke Bainer hit a fly ball that went off the net for a double and scored on a Taylor Davis single to right field.
The Breds (16-31, 6-12 OVC) took advantage of a pair of errors in the third to push across three unearned runs. Wes Warren started the rally with an infield bunt single with two outs and went to second on the throwing error. Ty Stetson walked and Brandon Elliott hit a chopper to third, but the third baseman tried to tag the runner, but dropped the ball on contact. Travis Isaak followed with a two-run single through the left side and Jacob Rhodes plated another run with a single through the left side.
MOR broke the game back open in the home-half of the inning as Bud Morton delivered a run-scoring single through the left side ahead of a Pugh three-run home run to right center and a Luke bainer home run down the left-field line.
MUR got two runs back in the fourth as Paul Ritzheimer singled to left field and went to second on the throwing error. Elliot Frey drove in the runner with a single up the middle. Warren walked and Stetson hit a ball back to the pitcher, but it was thrown into center field, allowing a run to score.
The Breds got a leadoff single from Rhodes in the seventh, but the next two hitters were retired. After Cody Larson was hit by a pitch and passed ball advanced both runners, Frey blooped a two-run single over the head of the first baseman.
Rhodes went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Frey collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs.
Jake Donze (6-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 12 hits and six strikeouts over three innings. Trey Smith (1-9) earned the victory after allowing five runs, one earned, on eight hits over five innings. Josh Schneider (3) earned the save by getting the final out.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
