The Murray State Racers started their 2012-13 season on Monday with an 87-74 exhibition win over Freed-Hardeman at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
Preseason All-American candidate Isaiah Canaan led the way for the Racers in the contest with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting including 3-for-7 from beyond the arch. Canaan also led MSU with five assists and a pair of steals in the exhibition victory.
The Racers added to their 45-42 halftime lead and started the second session on a 9-2 run to push the lead 55-44 with 16:42 remaining.
MSU would later push out to a 12 point lead (72-60) on baskets by Brandon Garrett and Ed Daniel with 6:13 left.
The first half was tight with the Racers taking an early 11-4 lead just 4:40 into the game on a Stacy Wilson jumper. The game was tied 27-27 at the 8:23 mark. MSU pushed to a 42-34 lead, but settled for a 48-44 advantage at the break. The half was highlighted by freshman Moss going 3-of-3 from 3-point range, while Canaan was 3-of-4.
Freshman Jeffery Moss hit his first three 3-point attempts and finished the game with 16 points off the bench. Stacy Wilson also added 16 points to the Racer attack.
MSU won the battle of the boards 43-37 with Ed Daniel leading the way for the Racers with seven. Moss added six boards while Wilson and Brandon Garrett had five rebounds each.
"I'm glad to get the year kicked off," MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said. "We had a good crowd in there tonight for such a rainy, cold night. We had a better second half effort on the defensive end, but we're not where we need to be. But it's early and we did get to play a lot of guys tonight, we played 11."
The Racers get back on the court Friday for the season opener when they host Brescia in the second part of a women's and men's double-header at the CFSB Center. The MSU women's team hosts Western Kentucky at 5:15 p.m. with the Racers' men's team tipping at 7:30 p.m.
