Breds Drop Wild Midweek Affair to Southern Illinois
4/3/2012 6:41:00 PM | Baseball
Six Murray State pitchers combined to allow just seven hits, but it was the 14 walks that did the damage as Southern Illinois erased an early deficit and left Reagan Field with a 13-10 victory.
The Breds (14-16) got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Ty Stetson singled through the right side and raced around the bases to score on a Jacob Rhodes double to left center. Cody Larson followed with a single to right field that was misplayed, allowing Rhodes to score and Larson to reach third. Colton Speed drove in the third run of the frame with a sharp single to right field.
MSU doubled its lead in the third inning as Larson and Speed singled to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt from Luke Daugherty, Dylan Wheeler delivered a two-run triple to left center, before scoring on a Noah Zipko single through the left side on the next pitch.
The Salukis (16-13) began to climb back into the game in the fourth as Austin Montgomery singled to start the inning and Jordan Sivertsen walked. After the next two hitters struckout, the next four hitters drew walks to plate three runs.
SIU was back at it in the fifth as Montgomery walked and scored on Sivertsen's two-run home run to right center.
The Breds used a two-out rally to push across two more runs in the fifth. Wheeler started things by being hit by a pitch and Zipko singled to left field. Paul Ritzheimer walked to load the bases, before a back pick at first was thrown down the right-field line, allowing two runs to score.
The Salukis battled all the back to take the lead in the sixth as Christ Serritella delivered an RBI double to right center before Sivertsen belted a three-run home run to left center.
MSU regained the lead in the seventh as Wheeler, Ritzheimer and Stetson walked to load the bases with one out. Travis Isaak drove in a run with a single to right field before Rhodes was hit by a pitch to score another run.
SIU didn't waste any time in regaining the lead as a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Sivertsen drove in a run with a fielder's choice before Brock Harding drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Salukis padded their lead in the eighth as en error helped extend the inning for Duschinsky to deliver a two-run double to left center.
Tim Vonder Haar (1-4) took the loss as he allowed two runs on a hit and a pair of walks without retiring a batter. Tyler Dray (2-1) earned the victory after allowing two runs on four walks and one hit over two innings. Todd Eaton earned his sixth save by striking out one in one inning of work.
Wheeler led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch, two RBIs and three runs scored. Stetson, Isaak, Larson and Speed each added two hits as the Breds collected 13 as a team.
The Breds return to Reagan Field Thursday afternoon as they open a three-game series against UT Martin. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
