Tennessee State scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally for a 17-10 victory over Murray State Saturday afternoon at LP Field in Nashville.
With the Racers holding a 10-3 advantage, TSU (9-3, 6-2 OVC) put together a nine-play scoring drive to tie the game. Telvin Hooks put the Tigers deep into Racer territory as he rushed three-straight plays for 30 yards. Two plays later, Ronald Butler found Wesley Samuels for the two-yard touchdown.
The Tigers got the ball back with 5:36 remaining in the game and put together the game-winning nine-play drive all on the ground. They covered 48 yards on the first eight plays, and then Hooks went the final 19 yards for the touchdown with just over a minute remaining.
The Racers (5-6, 3-4 OVC) got a big return by Jaamal Berry on the kickoff to the 43-yard line. A dropped pass over the middle on the first play was followed by a pair of sacks and an incompletion to end the game.
On the second drive of the game, the Racers used an 11-play drive to go 94 yards to reach the endzone. Frazier started the drive with an 18-yard completion to Paul Rice, before hooking up with Janawski Davis for 27 yards. Duane Brady gained seven yards on the ground, before Frazier hit Jordan Morrow for 11 yards. Pokey Harris capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown reception, his second in as many weeks.
The Racers extended their lead in the second quarter as Frazier went up the middle for 16 yards, and then hit Davis for 30 yards. The drive reached the red zone before Marc Wynstra connected on a 24-yard field goal.
TSU got on the board late in the first half as they took advantage of a Racer turnover and a successful fake punt. Jamin Godfrey capped off the possession with a 33-yard field goal.
The Racer defense held the Tigers to just 60 yards passing. It marked the second time this season that the Racers have allowed just 60 yards through the air. Â
Frazier finished the game by going 30-for-43 for 247 yards and a touchdown. Morrow and Paul Rice each had a team-high six receptions. Morrow had 57 yards receiving, while Rice added 39. Â
Sam Small led the defense with nine tackles. Perry Cooper and Brandon Wicks each added six.
