The Murray State Racers hit the road for their fifth trip to the state of California since 2004 when they play in the San Francisco Bay Area against the Saint Mary's Gaels. The game is part of the Shamrock Classic and will be played at McKeon Pavilion, in Moraga, Calif., tips at 10 p.m. Central Time/8 p.m. Pacific Time.
The Racers and Gaels can be heard on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Television was a late add this week when Comcast Bay Area picked up the contest and it will also be see locally CSS and ESPN3.
Murray State (2-4) has dropped two in a row after an 80-62 defeat at home Tuesday to Middle Tennessee. The Racers trailed 38-24 at half and got as close as eight points with 16:40 left. Four Racers scored in double-figures with Dexter Fields leading the way with 12. SMC (5-0) has played all of their games so far at home and last played on Nov. 24 in a 72-55 win over Alcorn State.
Murray State's recent games in the Golden State go back to 2004 when they played at Saint Mary's in the Shamrock Classic against UC Davis and the Gaels. MSU returned in 2006 for the same event and took on San Diego State, Seattle-Pacific and SMC. In 2009, MSU opened the season at California and later that season in 2010, beat Vanderbilt and nearly upset Butler in the NCAA Tournament in San Jose. In November of 2010, MSU played in Anaheim at the 76 Classic and played Stanford, Oklahoma State and UNLV.
SMC leads the all-time series with the Racers 2-1.
The last time these two met will be remembered in Racer history for a long time. In 2012 the game marked the first time MSU was ranked and hosted a ranked team when the Gaels came to the CFSB Center. In front of a record crowd of more than 8,800, legendary announcer Dick Vitale brought ESPN to the Racers' home court. The Racers won the game 65-51. Two stars were featured and are now with the NBA's Rockets and Cavaliers...MSU's Isaiah Canaan and Matthew Dellavedova of St. Mary's. Â No players remain on the MSU roster from that 2012 game and only four remain on the SMC roster.
The schedule doesn't get any easier once the Racers return to the CFSB Center to face Evansville (Dec. 4). The Purple Aces (5-1) suffered their first loss at Indiana (Nov. 23) 77-46. The game with UE begins a three-game home stand for the Racers with additional games against Lipscomb (Dec. 7) and Southern Illinois (Dec. 17). The Racers have a 10-day break between games when fall semester final exams will be held at MSU.
