Rivalry Week Continues - Racers At WKU Saturday

The Murray State Racers meet the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers for the 151st time Saturday (Dec. 21) when the two traditional rivals meet in a 1 p.m. tip at Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Ky. The game can be heard on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The Racer TV Network will carry the game locally on the Time Warner, Murray Electric and Mediacom cable systems. Online streaming video is on ESPN3.
The Racers defeated Southern Illinois Tuesday 73-65 to push their overall and home winning streak to three to make their record this season 5-5. MSU's 3-game home win streak gives them a good rebound from a prior 3-game road losing streak. MSU was 23-of-32 from the free throw line for nearly 72 percent, marking their best effort this season against a D-I opponent. They also had 13 offensive rebounds and has a streak of three straight games with 10+. MSU's 15 assists was a season-high against D-I team. MSU had 15 assists on 21 field goals.
Cameron Payne became the first MSU freshman to have two 20-point scoring games in a season since Ivan Aska in 2008-09. Payne's 22 points featured 17 in the second half to go with seven assists and five rebounds. T.J. Sapp played in his first game as a Racer and hit the Salukis with a burst of nine points in a span of 2:06 in the first half. Sapp finished with 15 points and was 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
Payne, the top scoring freshman in the Ohio Valley Conference (14.1 ppg), was named OVC Freshman of the Week for a second time (Dec. 9). Â He is third in the OVC and 43rd nationally with 5.6 per game. Gordon State JC transfer Jarvis Williams is fifth in the nation and second in the OVC with 11.2 rebounds per game. Â He has recorded four double-doubles this season and six rebound games of 10+.
During the Racers' 3-game run, they've out-rebounded the opponent 113-97 and have assisted on 64 percent of their field goals (43 on 67). MSU has made 23 3-point baskets while holding the opponent to 11.
Payne has six straight games with double-figure scoring, while Jeffery Moss has four.
Original members of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Racers and Hilltoppers haven't played an OVC game since the Hilltoppers left in 1982 for the Sun Belt Conference. WKU leads the all-time series 95-55 and 57-13 at Diddle Arena. MSU has had the upper hand lately with three-straight wins and four of the last five meetings including their last trip to Diddle in 2011. Â Outside their meetings with WKU, the Racers are 31-11 against current Sun Belt teams.
