Racers Win 1-0 At EIU On Nepokojova Goal

The Murray State soccer team scored in the 84th minute Friday to earn a 1-0 win at Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill. The game was played at EIU's practice field after their usual game day facility, Lakeside Field, was made unplayable by recent heavy rain.

The win pushed the Racers to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. MSU notched their second road win of the season and their third straight win.

With a little more than six minute remaining in a scoreless game, the Racers created a good scoring opportunity which resulted in a hand ball penalty was called on EIU. The resulting direct kick was taken by Pavlina Nepokojova and she scored to put MSU ahead 1-0 with 6:44 remaining.

EIU (2-12-2, 1-5-1) and the Racers battled all day long, but MSU was in attack mode from the start as they had 20 shots on the day while holding the Panthers to nine.

Murray State goal keeper Shelby Haworth improved to 8-5 with her sixth shutout of the season and her third straight. The Racers again kept the heat off their keeper and Haworth handled the three shots she did face with three saves.

Nepokojova, who score her second goal of the season finished with seven shots for Murray State including three on goal.

The Racers return to action (Oct. 24) with a road game at Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn. Game time at Morgan Brothers Field is 7 p.m.
