Racers Fall In OT At SIUE - Win Streak Snapped
10/3/2014 6:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Murray State Racers saw their five-game win streak stopped in a 2-1 double-overtime defeat to SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill., in Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer.
The Racers fell to 6-6 overall and suffered their first conference loss and are now 2-1 heading to Southeast Missouri Sunday. The Cougars improved to 4-4-1 and 2-0 in the OVC.
Trailing 1-0 in the 69th minute, Taylor Stevens tied the score 1-1 on her third goal of the season and even though the Racers had some good chances to get the lead, time ran out and MSU was onto their second OT this season after they played extra time at Middle Tennessee (Sept. 12).
Chances were few for either squad as the first extra frame ended with the game still tied 1-1.
Shelby Haworth, who made 10 saves in goal for the Racers, made an outstanding stop as the clock ticked under six minutes. However, SIUE executed a proper corner kick and Emily Grahl scored for the 2-1 win for SIUE with 5:41 remaining.
When SIUE scored only seven minutes into the match, it broke a run of 457 minutes in which the Racers had not trailed.
In keeping with their relentless attacking style under first-year Head Coach Jeremy Groves, the Racers worked their way into some good first half scoring chances, including one off a corner kick in the 10th minute by Pavlina Nepokojova. MSU also saw Rebecca Bjorkvall take a shot that SIUE goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley had to save in the 12th minute. Mooney had a shot go wide in the 23rd minute and Bjorkvall put a header on goal in the 42nd minute.
The Racers continue their weekend road trip with a match Sunday at 1 p.m. against Southeast Missouri State at Houck Stadium in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Match Notes
Stevens scored her third goal in two games and has four in her MSU career.
Haworth had gone 202-minutes 28 seconds since the last time a team scored a goal against her. That was at home against Northern Kentucky (Sept. 21).
MSU's five-game win streak is a school record. The longest MSU unbeaten streak is seven from the 2008 season.
MSU played its second overtime game this season after they lost 1-0 at Middle Tennessee (Sept. 12).The game marked MSU's first double-overtime game since a 0-0 tie Aug. 25, 2013 at home.
MSU came up short in their bid to win an overtime game for the first time since they beat Jacksonville State at home 2-1 Oct. 19, 2012. MSU's last road win in overtime was Sept. 11, 2011 at Arkansas State by a 1-0 score. Their last road overtime win in OVC play was Oct. 28, 2007 at UTM 2-1.
The Racers are 3-3-4 all-time in road OVC overtime games.
