Murray State left hander Brock Downey only faced one batter over the minimum as he tossed six shutout innings in leading the Breds to a 9-0 victory over North Dakota State in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Downey (2-0) allowed just two hits and struck out five to pick up the victory. He gave up a one-out walk in the third, but picked the runner off of first. He surrendered his first hit with two outs in the fourth, but got struck out the next hitter looking to end the inning. The only other hit he allowed was a one-out single in the sixth that was erased on a 4-6-3 double play.
The Breds (5-5) got all the offense they would need in the first inning as Anthony Bayus walked and stole second. Tyler Lawrence drove him in with a single through the left side.
Ty Stetson helped to manufacture a second run in the third inning by drawing a walk. He then proceeded to steal second, before advancing to third on a wild and then scoring on the second wild pitch of the inning.
MSU broke the game wide open in the fifth as they pushed across seven runs on seven hits. Taylor Mathews drove in the first run with a single up the middle, and Lawrence drove in his second run by drawing a bases-loaded walk. After a Luke Daugherty RBI groundout, Michael Hargrove delivered a two-run single. Clay Kelly closed out the scoring with a two-run single to center, his second hit of the inning.
John Lollar came on in relief of Downey in the seventh and retired all three hitters he faced. The Murray, Ky., connection combined to not allow a Bison to advance past first base.
Kelly paced the offense by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Lawrence and Hargrove each added two RBIs. Stetson scored a pair of runs and extended his streak of reaching safely to 38-straight games.
The series finale, scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday, has been canceled due to the impending weather.
