Live Stats I Game Notes
The Murray State Racers (4-5) are a home this weekend for the start of the women's soccer season in the Ohio Valley Conference. MSU hosts the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (2-7) Friday at 3 p.m. and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (4-5-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place on the pitch of Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.
The weekend matches have free admission as MSU plays its ninth and 10th regular season matches and their fourth and fifth home matches.
The Racers enter the weekend on a three-match win streak, their first since September 2012. A win Friday would give the Racers their first four-game win streak since 2008. The program record win streak is five from the 2005 season. 2014 is the 14th season of women's soccer after the program started in 2000. During the streak, the Racers have outscored the opponent 8-2.
Julie Mooney, the OVC Player of the Week, is coming off a four-goal weekend when she recorded the Racers' 10th all-time hat trick in a win over IUPUI last Friday. Mooney is the OVC's career active leader in goals (23), assists (13) and points (59). In Sunday's win over Northern Kentucky, the Racers had four goals by four different players and all four goals had a different player making an assist.
Defensively, the Racers are playing as well as they have all season. Last weekend in two wins over IUPUI and Northern Kentucky, the Racers kept the heat off of freshman goalkeeper Shelby Haworth as she only had to make two saves. MSU gave up only a goal in each game to lower Haworth's goals-against-average to 1.15 per game. Haworth has started the last six matches. Taylor Stevens has played her part for the MSU defense and was this week's OVC Defensive Player of the Week. The Racer back line of Stevens, Rebecca Bjorkvall, Ali Critcher, Kelsey Smith and Halle Pinkham has performed at a high level.
MSU leads their series with Tech 8-7-1 after winning in Cookeville in 2013. MSU holds a 7-3-1 lead on JSU including a 1-0 win in 2013 at Jacksonville, Ala.
The Racers rank second in the OVC in shots (125) and fourth in goals per game (1.44). MSU's goals-against-average (1.87) is seventh in the league.
After the weekend home games with TTU and JSU, the Racers go on the road next weekend (Oct. 3 & 5) to face SIUE and Southeast Missouri.
