The Murray State Racers get ready to play a trio of games Thanksgiving week at the third annual Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. All games in the eight-team event will be played at Germain Arena.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis. Free video streaming of every game at the Gulf Coast Showcase can be founed at the event's YouTube channel.
The Racers are in the Gulf Coast Showcase for the first time and join seven other fine programs including: Central Michigan, Drake, Duquesne, Milwaukee, Pepperdine, Weber State and Western Kentucky. The Racers meet the Milwaukee Panthers for the first time Monday (Nov. 23) in an 11 a.m. CT tip. MSU gets either DuQuesne or Pepperdine in the second game. The Racers last in-season tournament title was the 2011 Great Alaska Shootout. MSU also made it to the title game of the 2012 Charleston Classic where they lost a close game to Colorado. MSU is 11-7 since 2008 in in-season tournaments.
The Racers are 2-1 after falling Friday at Georgia 63-52. Murray State used a 14-4 run to grab a two-point lead with four minutes left in Athens, Ga., but were undone by Kenny Gaines who carried the Bulldog's 15-2 run to end the game and ended with 35 points. Bryce Jones, Chad Culbreath and Damarcus Croaker led the Racers in scoring with 11 points each. Jones added a team-leading seven rebounds and three assists. The defeat for the Racers snapped an 11-game road win streak dating back to their last loss at Xavier on Nov. 24, 2014. MSU nearly went a year without losing a road game.
Murray State is no stranger to winning basketball as the Racers enter the 2015-16 season with the nation's fourth longest streak of consecutive winning seasons at 28. MSU won their 24th Ohio Valley Conference regular season title last season and had a 25-game win streak to finish 29-6. They competed in the National Invitation Tournament and were denied a trip to the semifinals on a last-second banked in 3-pointer at Old Dominion. MSU lost four starters from last season including NBA lottery pic Cameron Payne who is with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Jonathan Fairell (Austria), T.J. Sapp (Germany) and Jarvis Williams (Polland) are all playing professionally in Europe.
MSU's 16th head coach is Matt McMahon and is taking Racers on the road for the first time. McMahon assisted Steve Prohm in 104 wins at MSU in the last four seasons. Prohm took the job at Iowa State in early June and the Racers quickly named McMahon head coach.
After competing at the Gulf Coast Showcase, the Racers are back at home (Nov. 28) to meet Alabama A&M at the CFSB Center. MSU heads out of town again (Dec. 3) to play the Houston Cougars.
