The Murray State Racers saw their comeback bid fall short in a 63-59 loss against the UT Martin Skyhawks at the Elam Center in Martin, Tenn.
MSU fell to 11-11 and 5-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while UTM moved to 11-12 and 3-5.
Jeffery Moss led the way with a season-high 22 points on 6-of-12 shooting from 3-point range.
The Racers hit what amounted to a four-point play at the 10:30 mark when Gee McGhee was fouled excessively. After a made free throw, the Racers had possession and Justin Seymour hit a 3-pointer to make it a 46-44 game with 9:55 left. Moss's sixth 3-pointer of the day cut the UTM lead to 48-47 with 7:05 left. The Racers twice more cut the lead to two points but couldn't tie it or take the lead. Wayne Langston had a 3-point play with 1:10 left and Moss had a tying three in his sights with 30-seconds left.
In the first half, the Racers used an 8-0 run to grab a 16-11 lead at the 9:55 mark. Moss scored all eight points for MSU. The lead held to the 3:00 mark with MSU in front 23-19. The Racers held a 30-27 lead at intermission.
Moss had 14 points at the half on 4-of-7 shooting from the 3-point line.
Langston was in foul trouble early and only saw action in four minutes in the first half and only 15 for the game as Murray State's leading rebounder was held to three points and three rebounds.
UTM started the second half on a 16-7 run for a 43-37 lead with 12:04 remaining. The Racers went cold and hit only 5-of-12 shots, while UTM hit 11-of-22 for their biggest lead of the day. The lead for UTM went to 46-30 with 10:30 left to play.
Both the Racers and Skyhawks participated in Suits & Sneakers week. Sponsored by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC), the weeklong event is meant to create awareness for the fight against Cancer as the coaches wear sneakers with their dress clothes. The NABC works with the American Cancer Society each year on the event.
