Racers Let Fourth Quarter Lead Slip Away in Loss

The Murray State women went cold and Southeast Missouri got hot at the most inopportune time for the Racers Wednesday night at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., as the Racers fell to the Redhawks, 79-70. MSU shot just 16.7 percent (3-for-18) in the fourth quarter while the Redhawks went 11-of-18 from the floor in the final 10 minutes.
MSU (12-8, 4-3 OVC) ended up shooting 33 percent for the game and went 6-of-21 from 3-point range. The Redhawks (9-12, 3-5 OVC) shot 42.5 percent and were 5-of-23 from beyond the arc. The Racers had a great night at the free-throw line, shooting 20-of-22 (91 percent) while SEMO went 12-for-15 (80 percent).
Wednesday's contest was a back-and-forth affair all night as the two teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter. MSU carried a 29-28 lead into halftime and had its biggest lead of the game of six points, 56-50 heading into the final quarter. The Racers were outscored 29-14 in the fourth.
Ke'Shunan James led four Racers in double figures with 23 points in the loss. James also grabbed 10 rebounds to tally her fourth double-double of the year. James also tied a career-high with 11 made free throws on the night. Bria Bethea recorded 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Abria Gulledge and LeAsia Wright added 11 points each in the loss.
The Racers surrendered 20 points off of 21 turnovers and scored just eight points off 14 Redhawks turnovers. SEMO also had a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint and an 18-2 edge in fast break points and a 16-13 margin on second-chance points.
MSU gets to return home on Saturday after a three-game road trip. The Racers host UT Martin at the CFSB Center in a 5 p.m., contest.
