The Game
The Murray State women's basketball team closes out a two-game mini home stand Tuesday when it hosts Arkansas State at 6 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray.
Last Time Out
The Murray State women's basketball team used a big second half to take down Christian Brothers Friday night at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky, defeating the Buccaneers, 95-59, in the Racers' home opener.
The Bucs kept pace with Murray State for the majority of the first half, trailing by just nine at the break. Brynne Lytle fueled CBU's effort by going 9-for-12 from the floor en route to a 20-point opening two quarters.
However, at halftime MSU head coach Rechelle Turner's directive to her team was to not allow Lytle another field goal and that is just what the Racers did. Lytle was 0-for-7 in the second half, scoring just two points off of free throws. Once MSU had Lytle shut down, the rest came easy.
The Racers outscored the Bucs, 48-21, in the second on their way to a 36-point win. Macey Turley led Murray State with 21 points and eight assists, while Laci Hawthorne had 16 points and 13 rebounds, for her second double-double of the season. Macie Gibson notched 13 in the contest, while Alexis Burpo and Lex Mayes had 12 each with Burpo also pulling down nine boards.
The Arkansas State Series
Tuesday will be the 18th meeting between the two teams, with Arkansas State taking a 9-8 lead in the series with a win in Jonesboro last season. Tuesday will mark the Red Wolves first trip to Murray since 1990, having won each of the last five either in Jonesboro or at a neutral site.
Scouting The Red Wolves
After a season-opening win against NAIA-member Central Baptist, the Red Wolves are currently 1-4 on the season. Arkansas State dropped their fourth consecutive game Saturday to North Carolina A&T, 55-50, Saturday, in Chicago.
Through five games, the Red Wolves are currently being outscored by their opponents, 77.0 to 69.2, however are currently tied in rebounding as both ASU and its opponents are averaging 44.2 boards per game.
Peyton Martin currently leads the Red Wolves with 13.4 points per game, while Jireh Washington follows at 12.0, as well as a team high 4.2 assists per game. Morgan Wallace is ASU's leading rebounder so far this season with 8.4 boards per game to go along with 10.6 points. Payton Tennison rounds out the four Red Wolves averaging double-digits on the year with 10.0
E Is For Efficiency
Not only did all five starters score in double digits, but all five shot at least 50-percent from the floor.
Double Or Nothing
Laci Hawthorne notched the third MSU double-double of the season and her second Saturday in the win over CBU with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Capitalizing On Mistakes
The Racers only outscored the Buccaneers Friday off turnovers 11-9 in the first, but in the second MSU limited them, 12-3.
