Racers Host Simmons Invite to Open Outdoor Season

After winning indoor OVC title, Racers begin quest for outdoor crown
The Murray State women's track and field team will kick off the outdoor portion of its 2022 schedule by hosting the Margaret Simmons Invitational at the Marshall Gage Track located inside Roy Stewart Stadium Friday and Saturday in Murray, Kentucky.
About The Meet
The event is named in honor of Murray State's long time women's track coach Margaret Simmons, who led the Racers from 1968 to 1991, winning eight OVC championships in the process. The Murray State and OVC Hall of Famer was MSU's first-ever women's track and field head coach and its first ever women's cross country, a program she founded in 1971.
Action begins Friday at 12:30 p.m. with the field events at Hamilton Field and will conclude at 7:55 p.m. at Roy Stewart Stadium with the men's 10,000m. On Saturday, the field events rev back up at Hamilton Field at 9:30 a.m., while the meet's final event, the men's 1,600m relay, will take place at 6 p.m. that evening at the stadium.
About The Field
Male and female athletes representing 28 different institutions across all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA will be on hand on Friday and Saturday to compete in 44 different events. Among the Division I institutions competing will be current OVC foes Austin Peay, Morehead State, SIUE Tennessee Tech and UT Martin and future MVC foes Evansville and Southern Illinois. For the current OVC programs, the event will serve as a warm-up for the postseason as Murray State will host the 2022 OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 11-13 at the Marshall Gage Track inside Roy Stewart Stadium.

Fresh off winning the 2022 OVC Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Racers now turn their attention to the outdoor season with the end goal of capturing their second outdoor title in four seasons. Should MSU win the outdoor title at the end of the season, it would mark the first time since 1992 and just the second time in program history that the Racers would have won both championships in the same season.
Sixteen different Racer individuals or teams appear in the top five of the performance list for their specific event or events heading into the meet. Rachel Hagans appears in the stop five of the meet's top times and marks three separate times. She enters the event with the top mark in the long jump and the 4x100m relay, along with Hannah Malone, Teliyah James and JaKayla McSwain, and has the fourth best time in the 200m. Maria Bangala currently holds the top time heading into the 800m, while Ruth Kimutai leads the weekend's participants in the 10000m, as does Dani Wright in the 300m.
