Eight Racers Qualify For East Regional Prelims

Faith Bostick, Kayla Bell, Chelby Melvin, Simone Joseph, Lucia Hererro Yanez, Amirr Evans, Meghan Fletcher and DiamonAsia Taylor are headed to Lexington to compete in the NCAA East Regional Prelims.
Eight Murray State women's track and field athletes that comprise of Faith Bostick, Kayla Bell, Chelby Melvin, Simone Joseph, Lucia Hererro Yanez, Amirr Evans, Meghan Fletcher and DiamonAsia Taylor have qualified for the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds May 22-25 in Lexington, Kentucky, the NCAA office announced Thursday afternoon.
The eight qualifiers are the most for Murray State since head coach Adam Kiesler's arrival to Murray in 2010.
"We are extremely proud of the representation we will have in Lexington," Kiesler said. "It's extremely hard to make this meet, and to have five individuals and a relay is great."
Competing in the individual events are Bostick, Bell, Melvin, Fletcher and Taylor. Fletcher and Taylor both are set to compete in the high jump, Bostick in the 100-meter, Bell in the 800-meter and Melvin in the 400-meter hurdles.
Bostick saw a runner-up finish in the 100-meter at the Missouri Valley Outdoor Conference Championships with a time of 11.69, yet qualified for the finals with 11.44. Bell was among the top eight to score for her team in the 800 at the MVC Outdoor Championships with a time of 2:19.84 in the finals and 2:10.76 in the prelims.
Melvin set a new program record on her way to securing her first outdoor conference championship as a Racer in the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore dashed a time of 57.57, which was among the top 20 of all East Region qualifiers.
Fletcher finished among the top five at the conference championships with a height of 1.70 meters. Taylor set a new personal best in the high jump at 1.76 meters, sitting in a tie for 28th among East Region qualifying high jumpers.
Bell, Evans, Joseph and Melvin are set to represent Murray State in the 4x400-meter relay.
"It's been a good year for us and this gives each one of them to put a cherry on top of the season." Kiesler added.
The First Round for the women's events starts Thursday, May 23. Bostick competes to open the prelims for Murray State in the 100-meter, starting at 6 p.m. CT. Live coverage of the event is available on ESPN+ with live results available on GoRacers.com.
