The Murray State Racers travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for the 149th meeting with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a 7 p.m. tip at Diddle Arena. The game marks the continuation of one of the best rivalries in college basketball that started in 1932.
The Racers (7-0) are perfect so far in the 2011-12 season after winning three games last week at the Great Alaska Shootout which included 90-81 double-overtime victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. The Hilltoppers (2-5) won their last time out last Saturday at home in a 72-67 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
The game marks the fifth consecutive season the two have met as the home team has won the last four meetings. WKU leads the all-time series 95-53 and won last the last time the game was played in Bowling Green 83-72 in 2009. The Racers won last season at home 69-60 and have won nine of the last 15 meetings.
Junior Isaiah Canaan was named the MVP of the Great Alaska Shootout and Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week after he scored 25.3 points per game in three MSU wins.
In the championship win over USM, Canaan scored a career-high 36 points on 11-of-22 from the field (6-of-11 from three-point range) and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. His 36 points ranks 17th all-time at Murray State and 10th in the 34 years of basketball in the Great Alaska Shootout.
Canaan's season scoring average of 20.6 points per game is first in the OVC and 22nd among NCAA D-I players.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 7-0 start is tied for third among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. Prohm ranks with Harlan Hodges (7-0 in 1949-49) and just behind Mick Cronin (8-0 in 2003-04) and Tevester Anderson (9-0 in 1998-99).
