Isaiah Canaan scored 18 points as Murray State kept its undefeated record intact Thursday night, defeating Western Kentucky 70-59 at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Racers improved to 8-0 on the season, their best start to a season since the 2003-04 squad started out with the same mark, as Canaan, MSU's leading scorer on the season with 20.3 ppg, tallied 13 of his points in the first half to lead the Racers to a 40-28 advantage at halftime. Latreze Mushatt chipped in nine points off the bench, including seven straight points in a minute and a half near the end of the first 20 minutes.
MSU charged out of the locker room in the second half, building a 46-30 lead after just three minutes as Ivan Aska hit a pair of baskets.
Western Kentucky (2-6) would pull the advantage back as Jamal Crook scored 18 of his game-leading 20 points in the second half and 10 of the Hilltopper's 14 points over a three and a half minute stretch as they would bring the score to as close as 47-44 with 9:39 remaining in the game. The Racers would build another double digit lead over the next few mintues, jumping out to an 11 point lead with five minutes remaining before closing out the 11 point victory.
Ivan Aska added 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds as he led MSU with 10 points in the second half. Donte Poole also scored in double figures for the Racers with 10 points on the night.
Murray State shot 77.8 percent (21-27) from the free throw line in the game as five of the six players to attempt shots from the charity stripe either made all of their shots or missed just one.
Head coach Steve Prohm sits one game away from tying the 9-0 record for best start for a coach at Murray State in their first season, set by Tevester Anderson in 1998-99.
The Racers return home this weekend, welcoming Dayton to the CFSB Center Sunday afternoon. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
