Morgan Bodker netted her first goal of the season to extend Murray State’s winning streak to three matches.
The Murray State women's soccer team secured a win on Senior Day against Southern Illinois on Sunday at Cutchin Field.
"I'm really proud of the group," head coach Matt Lodge said. "Those are those wins that you just have to grind out, and they did just that. Mary Hardy ran 60 yards on a nothing ball, won it, dribbled past someone and scored it. Just dug deep, [she] did that for the team. It was just a team effort, and it was just so phenomenal. I'm so proud of them, that's the biggest word--proud."
After a scoreless first half, Mary Hardy scored the first goal of the match in the 62nd minute. She made her own run down the left sideline, making a Saluki defender miss and striking it just passed the SIU keeper's reach in the right side of the net.
Southern Illinois would even the match in the 73rd minute after a free kick ricocheted off the top post, falling right in front of SIU's Dana Cruz to put in for the goal.
Less than 30 seconds later, Southern Illinois would get called for a handball in the Racers' penalty box and Morgan Bodker netted her sixth-career goal and first of the season on a penalty kick.
The Racers played the final 40 minutes of the match with just 10 players after a red card was called for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
"We've obviously hit a run of form, and to lose the lead with a player down—it can be really defeating, and they just stepped up again and got another [goal]. Just really proud of them."
The Racers will return to action at Cutchin Field on Thursday, October 19 for the regular season home finale at 3 p.m. against Drake.
